What garage door repair costs in 2026, part by part

Part prices barely move across the country. What moves is labour rate and how fast the local climate destroys hardware - and for most people the whole bill comes down to which of five parts failed.

$180-380torsion spring, installed

Torsion spring, one: $180-380 installed

Both springs: $260-520

Opener replacement: $420-780

Single panel: $280-900

Most repairs finish in under two hours

Almost every garage door call comes down to one of five parts, and four of them are cheap. The expensive surprise is usually a panel, because panels are model-specific and a discontinued door turns a $300 repair into a $1,900 replacement conversation. Knowing which of the five you are looking at, before anyone arrives, is most of the negotiating power you will get.

The part that fails first

The spring above the door does the lifting - the opener only guides it. That is why a door with a broken spring feels like it weighs three hundred pounds, because it does.

It is also why the repair is priced the way it is: a $40-95 part, thirty minutes of skilled work, and a job where getting it wrong sends steel across a garage. The spread between quotes is almost entirely labour and margin, not parts.

Springs: the repair most often mispriced

A torsion spring is rated in cycles, not years. A 10,000-cycle spring on a door that opens four times a day is a seven-year part. The same spring on a house where the garage is the front door, opened ten times a day, is a three-year part. This is why two neighbours with identical doors get different answers, and why 'it is only five years old' is not the argument it feels like.

If your door has two springs and one has broken, replacing only the broken one is a false economy that many companies will quietly agree to. The surviving spring has the same cycle count and will fail within months, and you will pay the call-out fee twice. Replacing the pair costs roughly $260-520 and is the honest recommendation.

Why the same repair costs more in some cities

Two things move the number: local labour rate, and how hard the climate is on hardware. Freeze-thaw cycles are the quiet killer - moisture in the roller bearings freezes, expands, and the roller starts dragging on the track. Dry heat does the opposite kind of damage, baking the weatherstripping brittle and warping composite panels on the south face. City pages below carry the local numbers.

Spring replacement, single door, by city

CitySpring replacement, installedLocal factor
Boise, ID$190-340105 freeze-thaw days a year drag on roller bearings
Spokane, WA$200-360Heavy snow load and 95 freeze-thaw days
Sioux Falls, SD$210-370Hard winters; doors cycle less but harder
Fort Wayne, IN$180-320Moderate climate, lower labour rate
Shreveport, LA$170-310Humidity rusts cables before springs fail

Questions worth asking before anyone comes out

Can I replace a torsion spring myself?

You can, and people do, but this is the one repair on the list where the failure mode is serious injury. A torsion spring under tension stores enough energy to break an arm or worse, and the winding bars have to be handled correctly at every quarter turn. Extension springs on older doors are less dangerous but still not trivial. If you are going to do one job on this list yourself, make it the rollers.

My opener works but the door reverses straight away. Is the opener dead?

Usually not. That behaviour is most often the safety sensors near the floor being knocked out of alignment or blocked, which costs nothing to fix. If the sensor lights are steady and aligned and it still reverses, the next suspect is the force setting on the opener, then the door itself binding on the track. An opener replacement is the last thing to consider, not the first.

Is a $99 service call a good deal?

It is a good deal if the $99 is credited against the repair, and a poor one if it is not. Ask directly: does the call-out fee come off the job if I go ahead? Also ask whether the quoted price includes the spring itself or just the labour. Most of the wide spread you see between companies disappears once both quotes are stated the same way.

The door is 20 years old. Repair or replace?

Repair, unless the panels are damaged or rotten. Springs, rollers, cables and openers are all wear parts with a defined price, and replacing all four on an old door still costs less than a new door. The genuine replacement triggers are structural: rot along the bottom panel, impact damage on a discontinued model, or a door so heavy and poorly insulated that heating the space is the actual problem.
